Our Top 5 Favourite Walks in Mid Devon

1. Exe Estuary Trail

Embark on the Exe Estuary Trail; a 26-mile, mainly flat walkway and cycle route which runs around the entire Exe Estuary. The estuary links Exmouth, Exeter, and Dawlish, and the walking route is predominantly off-road, offering spectacular views along the River Exe. You’ll experience the true wonders of the Exe Estuary, where you can appreciate the wildlife and beautiful towns and villages which are steeped in maritime history. You even can find great lunch stops along this route like Turf Locks and The Swan Inn.

2. The Tarka Trail, Barnstable

Inspired by Henry Williamson’s much-loved novel Tarka the Otter, the Tarka Trail in Barnstable is a 163-mile route which follows Tarka’s journeys in a figure of eight through North Devon’s UNSECO Biosphere. You can view the incredible, ever-changing scenery as described in the book, featuring tranquil countryside, wooded river valleys, rugged moorland, and dramatic coastlines.

3. Tarr Steps

One of our favourite spots for a walk in Mid Devon is the Tarr Steps. This circular route leads you along the ancient River Barle, through woodland rich with perfect picnic spots, and finally ending back where you began at the clapper bridge – the longest and oldest of its kind if Great Britain. If you fancy challenging yourself, you can link this route with another nearby walk, and then reward your efforts with a refreshing drink or lunch at the Tarr Farm Inn, which overlooks the majestic bridge.

4. Wistman’s Wood, Dartmoor

Wistman’s Wood lies in the middle of Dartmoor National Park and boasts an easy walk along a well-marked path, perfect for walkers looking for a leisurely stroll. This magical walk takes you through enchanting woodland, where you’ll creep beneath the trees lichen-covered boughs in a forest that has remained unspoiled for hundreds of years. A cosy spot for lunch during your walk is the Warren House Inn, a stunning traditional inn featuring oak beams and burning log fires.

5. Bickleigh

Step outside the door of your luxury safari tent and wander down the wonderful woodland paths to the charming nearby village of Bickleigh. Suitable for all ages, you’ll find Devon Railway Centre, Bickleigh Mill, and one of our favourite local pubs, Fisherman’s Cot, along the way. You can even walk down quiet country lanes to reach Bickleigh Castle, an exquisite piece of architecture.
